The Silverwood Band was formed in 1981, providing an opportunity for people across Teesside to play music together. The band was established by local musician, Allan Waller, with the band name originating from its silver and woodwind instruments, such as Clarinets, Flutes, Saxophones, Trombones, Tubas, Horns, Cornets, Oboes, Euphonium and Percussion and the area it was based in.
The band originally rehearsed in venues in Redcar, including the Coatham Hotel. In the early 90’s the band moved to the Nunthorpe Institute, Connaught Road in Nunthorpe which was their rehearsal venue for a few years. Due to its change in localtion and the fact that the band now drew musicians from across the Tees Valley it was about this time that the band was renamed ” The Silverwood Band”. Unfortunately a fire at the Institute in 1997 meant that band not only lost part of its music library, but also that the Institute and the band had to find a new home. A new venue for the Institute was found and the band had a new home. Rehearsals now takes place at The Nunthorpe Institute, The Avenue Primary School, Nunthorpe every Thursday night from 7.30pm-9.30pm.
